Swingweight Isn't Total Weight

Put two drivers on a kitchen scale and they might both read exactly 305 grams. Swing them both and one can feel noticeably heavier in the hands than the other. That's swingweight at work, and it's a completely different measurement from total weight.

What Swingweight Actually Measures

Swingweight describes how weight is distributed along the club relative to a fixed fulcrum point, rather than how much the club weighs overall. Move weight toward the head, and swingweight goes up even if total weight stays identical, because more mass sits farther from the fulcrum. Move that same amount of weight toward the grip end, and swingweight drops for the same reason in reverse.

Why Two Identical-Weight Clubs Can Feel Different

A lighter overall head paired with a heavier grip can land on the same total weight as a heavier head with a lighter grip, yet produce two very different swingweight readings. The club with more weight concentrated toward the head will feel like it has more momentum through impact, even though a scale shows no difference between the two builds at all.

Total weight tells you how much the club weighs. Swingweight tells you how that weight is positioned — and it's usually the second number that determines how a club actually feels.

Why This Matters During a Build

When we adjust shaft weight, grip weight, or add tip and butt weighting during a build, swingweight shifts as a side effect whether we plan for it or not. Checking it on the frequency-and-swingweight rig before a club leaves the shop confirms the finished feel actually matches what was decided on the bench, not just what the parts happened to add up to.
