Most fitting conversations start and end with clubhead speed, but two golfers with identical speed numbers can have very different tempo ratios — and that difference changes what shaft weight and kick point actually work best for each of them.

What Tempo Ratio Measures

Tempo ratio compares the time spent in the backswing to the time spent in the downswing. Tour average sits close to 3:1, meaning the backswing takes roughly three times as long as the downswing. Golfers with a quicker transition — a lower ratio — load the shaft more aggressively in a shorter window, while golfers with a smoother, longer transition load it more gradually.

Why This Changes Shaft Selection

A shaft that's too light for an aggressive, low-ratio transition can feel like it's overloading and releasing before impact, costing consistency even at high clubhead speed. The same shaft in the hands of a smoother-tempo golfer might feel perfectly controlled, because the loading happens more gradually across a longer window.

Two golfers can post identical clubhead speed numbers and need noticeably different shaft weights, simply because they load the shaft on different timelines.

How We Capture It on the Bench

Before any shaft testing begins, we record a short set of swings with your current clubs specifically to calculate tempo ratio. That number, alongside clubhead speed, shapes which shaft weight classes even make it onto the board for testing — narrowing the field before we ever look at flex or kick point.
