Static Loft vs. Dynamic Loft

The number stamped on the head is a starting point, not a promise.

Pick up a driver and the loft stamped on the sole tells you exactly one thing: how the head is built at rest. It says nothing about what loft actually gets presented to the ball the moment the club makes contact — and that gap is often bigger than golfers expect.

Static Loft Is Just the Starting Number

Static loft is measured with the club sitting still, shaft perfectly vertical. It's a manufacturing spec, useful for comparing heads against each other, but it assumes conditions that never actually exist mid-swing.

Dynamic Loft Is What the Ball Actually Sees

Dynamic loft is the effective loft at the moment of impact, once shaft lean, attack angle, and hand position are all factored in. A golfer who delivers significant forward shaft lean at impact can turn a 10.5° driver into something that behaves closer to 8° at the moment it matters, while a golfer who arrives with the shaft leaning back can add several degrees the other direction.

Two golfers hitting the same 10.5° driver can be launching the ball at effectively different lofts entirely — the sticker never changes, but the delivered number does.

Why This Changes How We Fit Loft

Rather than starting from "what loft should this golfer play" as a fixed number, we measure attack angle and shaft lean first, then work backward to the static loft that produces the dynamic loft that's actually going to optimize launch and spin for that specific delivery.

The Takeaway

If two golfers with different swings both play a 10.5° driver, at least one of them is probably leaving distance on the table. Static loft is a useful label, but dynamic loft is the number that determines what actually happens to the golf ball.
